Abstract

This study aimed to 1) examine the level of self-protection against becoming a victim of cyberstalking among children and youth in educational institutions, and 2) compare the level of self-protection between male and female students and youth in educational institutions. A quantitative research methodology was employed. The sample consisted of 400 lower and upper secondary school students from schools in Bangkok, selected through stratified random sampling. The research instrument was an online questionnaire, which was validated for content accuracy by three experts and demonstrated a reliability coefficient of 0.83. The statistics used for data analysis included percentage, mean, and standard deviation to describe the general characteristics of the sample group, and the Independent Samples t-test to compare the level of self-protection against becoming a victim of cyberstalking between male and female respondents. The results revealed that 1) children and youth had an overall self-protection level at a high level (Mean = 3.57, SD = 0.66). Specifically, risk-avoidance behaviour was at a high level (Mean = 4.05, SD = 0.737), while proactive self-protection behaviour was at a moderate level (Mean = 3.08, SD = 0.58). 2) Additionally, female students showed a significantly higher level of self-protection than male students at the statistical significance level of .05 (p < .05). In conclusion, the study highlighted the risks faced by children and youth due to online behaviour that may lead to victimization by cyberstalking. The study recommended that integrating digital literacy, cybersecurity awareness, and risk prevention into the school curriculum, along with encouraging parental involvement in monitoring and guiding their children’s use of social media should be put into practice.
