SOVEREIGNTY IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION: CHALLENGING THE NATION-STATE CONCEPT IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Abstract

This article examines the transformation of state sovereignty in the context of globalization, analyzing the challenges faced by nation-states in the 21st century across political, economic, social, and technological dimensions. The study reveals that globalization has significantly impacted state sovereignty in three key dimensions: the economic dimension, where intensified capital mobility and international trade have diminished states' economic control; the political and security dimension, where new threats increasingly transcend borders; and the technological dimension, where digital development and the Internet have challenged states' ability to control information flows. However, the study indicates that nation-states have not lost their significance but rather must adapt in various ways. These adaptations include shifting their role from controller to facilitator and coordinator, developing international cooperation mechanisms, improving legal frameworks and regulatory systems, and building partnerships with civil society and the private sector. The article presents policy recommendations for state adaptation in the globalization era and suggests that successful adaptation depends on the ability to develop new working mechanisms that can effectively respond to the challenges of the modern world. The findings contribute to our understanding of how states can maintain their relevance while adapting to the changing global context, highlighting the importance of balancing national interests with international cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
