The Role of Women in Local Politics: Challenges and Opportunities

This research aims to examine the role of women in local politics, analyze the factors influencing their participation, and identify the challenges and opportunities that affect women's political leadership at the local level. A mixed-methods approach was employed, collecting quantitative data from 100-150 survey respondents and qualitative data through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions.
The findings indicate that most women in local politics hold subordinate positions, such as local council members, rather than executive roles. Major obstacles include societal norms that favor male leadership (74%), economic and resource constraints (average 3.8/5.0), and lack of political party support. However, opportunities to enhance women's political roles include implementing gender quota policies (79%), leadership training programs (85%), and strengthening support networks from civil society organizations.
This study highlights the need for policy reforms to promote women's participation in local politics, particularly through structural changes and educational initiatives that empower women in political decision-making.
