บทคัดย่อ
บทความชิ้นนี้เป็นการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับความรู้ด้านเวชกรรมเมืองร้อน (Tropical Medicine) ที่เผยแพร่ในจดหมายเหตุทางแพทย์ของสภากาชาดสยาม (Medical Journal of the Siamese Red Cross) ซึ่งออกพิมพ์ในช่วง พ.ศ. 2461–2467 เวชกรรมเมืองร้อนเป็นการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับโรคเมืองร้อนที่พัฒนาขึ้นในโลกตะวันตกในครึ่งแรกของพุทธศตวรรษที่ 25 (ปลายคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19) บนฐานของทฤษฎีเชื้อโรคและการปกครองอาณานิคม แพทย์ชาวตะวันตกเป็นผู้ที่มีบทบาทสำคัญในการนำความรู้ด้านเวชกรรมเมืองร้อนเข้ามาเผยแพร่ในสังคมสยาม โดยพื้นที่แรกๆ ของการเผยแพร่ความรู้ด้านเวชกรรมเมืองร้อนคือ จดหมายเหตุทางแพทย์ของสภากาชาดสยาม ซึ่งเป็นวารสารทางการแพทย์ฉบับแรกของไทย นอกจากแพทย์ชาวตะวันตก ผู้เขียนบทความลงพิมพ์ยังมีแพทย์ชาวไทยด้วย โดยที่ความสนใจของแพทย์ชาวตะวันตกมีความสัมพันธ์กับความสนใจเรื่องโรคเมืองร้อนของแพทย์ในเครือข่ายทางการแพทย์และสาธารณสุขนานาชาติ/นานาอาณานิคมและของรัฐอาณานิคม ขณะที่แพทย์ชาวไทยให้ความสนใจกับโรคที่เป็นปัญหาทางการแพทย์และการสาธารณสุขของสยามมากกว่า
