Abstract

Due to the complex interactions between historical, social and cultural elements, money plays a large role in Thai culture. This essay examines why wealthy people in Thailand are occasionally admired or “adored” and why they often flaunt their wealth. The essay examines the cultural, social and economic factors that have influenced Thai society in order to understand these dynamics. It particularly examines the effects of social hierarchy and status, the importance of Buddhist values and beliefs, the impact of globalization and economic aspirations, cultural norms and expectations, and the relationship between wealth, influence and power. The essay attempts to provide a comprehensive understanding of the importance of money in Thai culture by examining these elements.
