ภาวะผู้นำมีค่านิยมในแต่ละยุคสมัยเป็นตัวกำหนดหรือบ่งชี้ว่าจะสามารถนำพาสมาชิกหรือสังคมให้ประสบความสำเร็จได้และเมื่อใดที่ผู้นำได้แสดงบทบาทหน้าที่โดยการใช้อำนาจหน้าที่หรืออิทธิพลสามารถโน้มน้าวชักจูงชี้แนะให้บุคคลหรือกลุ่มบุคคลได้แสดงพฤติกรรมอันมีผลต่อความสำเร็จหรือความล้มเหลวของกลุ่ม ลักษณะที่ผู้นำแสดงออกมานั้นก็คือความเป็นภาวะผู้นำ ในทัศนะของพระพุทธศาสนาภาวะผู้นำทางการเมืองของนักการเมืองไทยตามระบอบประชาธิปไตยต้องมีหลักธรรมประจำใจประกอบด้วย หลักปาปณิกธรรม หลักพรหมวิหารธรรม หลักสังคหวัตถุธรรม หลักอคติ หลักธรรมเหล่านี้จะเป็นสิ่งที่ช่วยส่งเสริมให้มีความเป็นผู้นำที่ดี ไม่เอารัดเอาเปรียบผู้อื่นทำให้เป็นนักการเมืองที่ดีตามระบอบประชาธิปไตย
