หลักธรรมาภิบาลในองค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่น คือ การปกครอง การบริหาร การจัดการ ควบคุมดูแลกิจการขององค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่นให้เป็นไปในครรลองธรรมมีความโปร่งใสตรวจสอบได้ ปราศจากการแทรกแซงจากองค์กรภายนอกเป็นการบริหารจัดการทั้งภาครัฐโดยมีประชาชนเป็นศูนย์กลางเพื่อให้ทุกคนในสังคมอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสงบสุข ประกอบด้วย ๖ ประการ ๑. หลักนิติธรรม ๒. หลักคุณธรรม ๓. หลักความโปร่งใส ๔. หลักการมีส่วนร่วม ๕. หลักความรับผิดชอบ ๖. หลักความคุ้มค่า ซึ่งรัฐธรรมนูญแห่งราชอาณาจักรไทย พ.ศ.2560 ได้กำหนดให้องค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่นยึดถือปฏิบัติตามหลักการบริหารกิจการบ้านเมืองที่ดีคือการปฏิบัติตามหลักธรรมาภิบาลนั่นเอง
